Happiness Project--the Sequel

 Oh, woe.

Happiness project part 1: Boost Energy was a flop. My plan, like the author of Happiness Project, was to boost energy by 1) eating healthier (too many birthday goodies around here for Big Guy's 9th birthday); 2) exercise more (pinched a nerve in my back frantically killing a tick on the bathroom wall. Darn Lyme-disease infested varmints) and 3) sleep more (5 y.o. spent more than a week waking me at 3 am to 1) find his plush Spongebob; 2) adjust his blanket; 3) put his bad dreams back in his dream catcher). All of which is to say: Energy boost=NOT.

I have decided to write the sequel to the Happiness Project titled, Why Bother? How Life Always Gets in the Way of Your Plans. Pen in hand, I opened up my notebook and then thought, Why bother?

Exactly.

How's things at your place? Any well-meaning resolutions gone wrong? I'd love some company in my energy depleted state. :p

When I finally learned to fully accept "it is what it is," life became a lot easier. Not that I don't try to do things like exercise regularly, eat plenty of veg, etc. But when I have the sort of stress-filled month this one has been--and mind, it has been all GOOD stress, I've learned to let go of all those intentions, with the promise that as soon as possible, I will return to them, but I Will Not Beat Myself Up about not being able to live them because of Circumstances Out of My Control.

Hope your 5-year-old lets you sleep late, or at least through the night, very, very soon.

Well, at least your post made me laugh :)

I've noticed that anytime I try and plan for more energy, it never works. The flip side, however, is that it often works when I'm not expecting it to -- so I hope you find that, as well :)

Good idea. I resolve to give up on resolutions. You hear that, Universe?

Thanks Karen. Got the chocolate. That should go in my sequel if I ever bother to write it: Must have copious amounts of chocolate on hand at all times. :p

Oh, how I loathe low energy and sleep deprivation. So sorry you're going through this right now, Karen. Yuck.

My recipe for more energy is getting out in the sun for about 15 minutes each day. Do you have sunshine now? If not, I'm boxing some up and sending it to you along with a Get Out of the Happiness Project free card.

Thanks, Tracy. We finally got sun starting yesterday and I'm soaking it up! I'll use your card too. I think I need to let happiness sneak up on me.

Yeah, I'm in that place, too, although your pug photo made me smile. :) My husband, who is a teacher, found out yesterday that he will be laid off this summer, along with 341 other teachers in his district. He has only had this job since March. And I have tried to be all super positive about it, but ... I'm not there. So not. And am tired, like you.

Here's to kids who will let you get some sleep, very soon, and a back that feels better soon so that you can exercise again and get back that energy. And time to yourself, when you most need it.

I have better luck if I try to add in one new habit or practice at a time. (Changing more than one thing at a time is just too hard for me.) But you came up with a brilliant title for a humor book: "Why Bother? How Life Always Gets in the Way of Your Plans." !

Project
Hi Karen,

So great you are doing this! It's such a great idea. Happiness? I think it's about getting outdoors no matter the weather and just being... it always works for me. Or it's about cooking something homemade or having a really fun blog post.

I'm not sure- I do know that this winter when I broke my finger, had surgery, and couldn't write my mood went south. Just being back in the game has helped a lot. Somedays, I just pretend to be happy. Total poser!

All the best,

Julie

Re: Project
Thanks for stopping by Julie. Absolutely outdoor time helps. Glad you're healed up now and can write again!
